Avsola (infliximab-axxq) is a biosimilar of Remicade. Avsola is indicated for the treatment of Crohn’s Disease, pediatric Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis and Plaque Psoriasis. Avsola is administered as an intravenous infusion.
A biosimilar is a medicine approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as being highly similar to an already approved biologic medicine. The FDA refers to the already approved biologic as the reference product. It is also known as the originator or original biologic product.
Avsola infusions are generally administered every six to eight weeks, and infusions are given over a period of about 2 hours. Infusions may be given more frequently at the start of therapy, known as the induction period. Sometimes pre-medications are administered prior to infusions, such as steroids, benadryl, or tylenol. An observation time may be required after your infusion.
Potential Side Effects
The most common side effects of Avsola include respiratory infections, cough, stomach pain and headache.
Avsola can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections.
Your doctor should test you for tuberculosis and hepatitis B before starting Avsola.
